Receiving vs. Taking: the art of following abundance

Many people struggle with receiving. They brush off compliments, feel guilty when accepting help, or believe they must always give before they can receive. This often comes from the belief that receiving is the same as taking—but this is a misunderstanding. Receiving happens naturally and effortlessly, while taking requires action and effort.

The difference between receiving and taking

Receiving means being open. It is a state of allowing in which you accept what life offers without guilt or fear. When you receive, you are not taking anything away from someone else—you are simply letting energy, love, and abundance flow toward you.

Look at nature: a tree doesn’t "take" water and sunlight; it simply receives them. It doesn’t hesitate or question whether it deserves them. It just allows. This is the essence of true receiving—it happens effortlessly when you permit it.

Taking, on the other hand, is an active process. It means grasping, claiming, or demanding something. Sometimes taking is necessary—like standing up for yourself or setting boundaries. But if you only take without learning to receive, it creates imbalance, and the natural flow of energy is disrupted.

Why is receiving so difficult?

Many people experience resistance when it comes to receiving. This can show up in different ways:

  • Feeling uncomfortable when given a compliment
  • Feeling guilty when accepting help or money
  • Believing you must handle everything alone
  • Doubting whether you are worthy of receiving

These blocks often come from upbringing, social conditioning, and limiting beliefs. Many of us were taught that giving is more valuable than receiving, that we must work hard to earn anything, or that receiving is selfish. But in reality, receiving is as natural as breathing. You wouldn’t refuse to inhale because you feel you haven’t "earned" the air—there must be balance.

Exercise: The art of receiving

To become more aware of your ability to receive and release any resistance, try this exercise:

  1. Find a quiet space where you can sit or lie down comfortably.
  2. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, allowing your body to relax.
  3. Visualize a warm, golden stream of energy flowing toward you. It could be love, abundance, or support—like standing in sunlight or feeling a gentle rain of light.
  4. Observe your body. How do you react? Do you feel open and relaxed, or do you notice tension? Perhaps you hold your breath, clench your jaw, or feel subtle resistance.
  5. Let the energy flow in without effort. Imagine yourself being filled with this energy, without any need to give something back.
  6. Stay in this state for a few minutes and allow yourself to fully receive. If you feel resistance, ask yourself: “What belief is blocking me from receiving?”
  7. Open your eyes and reflect: What did you feel? What thoughts came up? What does receiving mean to you?

Receiving as a path to spiritual growth

Learning to receive deepens your connection with yourself and the universe. It means trusting in the natural flow of energy and love, without attaching your worth to what you give.

When you struggle with receiving, you unconsciously block the energy that wants to come to you. This can show up as exhaustion, difficulty accepting help, or a sense of lack in your life. By consciously working on your ability to receive, you restore balance and create space for more ease and fulfillment.
